Like a picture in a gallery - some people finding it ‘beautiful’ and ‘the best thing they’ve ever seen’, others finding it ‘ghastly’ and ‘pointless’ - losing weight and keeping it off is different for every person! Some people can eat what they want and never put a pound on, others can just look at a cake and feel the weight pile on! But there are certain common sense things you can do that will help you lose weight and reach your target goal…without stepping foot in a gym or starving yourself!
Before I go any further, if you’re reading this blog for the first time, let me tell you that everything I talk about is from my own experience of being overweight and of losing over ten stone in weight. You should always consult a medical professional before undertaking any new diet or exercise regime.
The basics of losing weight
If we break it right down, losing weight and staying healthy is simple - eat less and do more exercise. By eat less, I don’t mean starve yourself on a carrot a day, doing something like that would send your body into starvation mode, clinging on to every bit of fat it can for survival. By do more exercise, I don’t mean go hell for leather down the gym seven days a week, that would shock your body and not have the desired result either. So, what exactly do I mean?
Take a good look at how much you currently eat, your portion size. Bear in mind that your stomach is about as big as your fist! Go on, clench your fist in front of you right now….wont take much to fill that up! If you have porridge for breakfast, have a little less, sub the sugar you add to it for a banana - it’ll still taste sweet and you’re getting one of your five a day! You don’t need a big meal at the end of the day either! If you sit on the sofa doing nothing for the night, you won’t use that energy and it’ll turn to fat! If you feel hungry, drink water, it’ll help fill you up.
Do More Exercise
When I say exercise, I don’t just mean a gym session! Exercise can be anything from a gym session to walking up the stairs at work, walking to the station instead of getting the bus, playing football in the park with the kids…for me, exercise is anything that gets your heart rate up and the blood pumping! How much exercise do you do now? They recommend 30 minutes a day. That thirty minutes doesn’t have to be in one go, it can be in bursts - your walk to work, walk home, walk at lunch, running up the stairs instead of taking the lift etc etc. Doing just a little more than you’re doing now will help get results.
Final word on ‘the art of losing weight’
If you want to lose weight and keep it off, don’t go on a diet! Diets are rubbish, as soon as you finish the diet and go back to eating normally, you’ll pile the weight back on, and thats not what you want. The art of losing weight and staying fit is to take a look at your life and make permanent changes to how much and what you eat, along with what exercise you do. The weight won’t drop off overnight, you need to stick with it, but trust me, it’ll be worth it in the end.
